Friendship

M. Night completely failed at showing any friendship between Aang and Katara, which is really sad because he's usually so good at character interaction. His other movies were very character focused, and family was almost always a major theme...

Everything in the Last Airbender had to be spelled out for the audience. So unless someone came right out and said "Aang and Katara are friends", there's no way of knowing.
